What would be a good song to lip sync for my theatre class?

For theatre class, we have to lip sync a song. It has to be an appropriate song that is clear enough to make out the words. I also have to wear a costume (but not an elaborate one) so if you have any suggestions for the song you suggest, that would be great. It’s supposed to be roughly 2-3 minutes.

Maybe you could do a Phantom of the Opera song…Think of Me would be a good one I think. Since it’s a theatre arts class I think an opera song would do really nicely. Plus Think of Me is really beautiful, but there is a part where a man sings…so maybe you would want a different one. If you need the song just contact me and I can send it to you in an e-mail,

    “Popular” from “Wicked”
“Shy” from “Once Upon a Mattress”
    “All That Jazz” from “Chicago”
    “Cabaret” from “Cabaret”

I have to say, I seriously question the reasoning and wisdom of a teacher even dealing with lip synching. The only thing it’s applicable for in “theatre” is drag shows.

A theatre class should be training you for stage work, and part of that is obviously the use of your actual voice.

If this bizarre exercise is mime-related, then that’s fine — but lip synching shouldn’t be part of it.

Sorry, but this endeavor sounds like a waste of time — YOU should be making the sound, not some stereo. I get the distinct impression your teacher is trying to appear “cutting edge,” but he/she is being more of a “time waster” — you are just not going to learn anything truly valuable, usable, or even marketable from this experience.

In My Own Little Corner from the musical Cinderella
is a good choice because the lyrics almost have an adventurous story like quality to them.

Pick a song that you’re able to act out while you’re doing it.

Being as its for a theatre class, they probably want you to do just that.

For example in the song i mentioned above, at one point the lyrics go

“In the night i sally forth to seek my quarry, and i find I forgot to bring my gun”

Act that part out by looking down at your imaginary gun.

Or whatever song you do pick, make sure its able to be acted out.

“Macho Man” by the Village People. As for costuming, if it’s just you doing the song, you could dress as any of the men in the ensemble, there are so many options.
