What song should I use for competition?

I’m in seventh grade and am a soprano. My Voice teacher isn’t exactly finding pieces I like (he doesn’t exactly have the same personality as me) I’m looking for something meaningful but fun to do. Also, I go to a Christian school so no rock or pop or really anything modern (which already cuts out alot of good songs) an example of the type of song I’m looking for is Over the Rainbow.
Please help me, I only have 2 months until tryouts.
I’m really serious about the whole strictness of the song selection thing, and it can’t be from movies unless its like the sound of music.
To answer Sharon’s question its just a regular competition so I guess I’m just competing for a ribbon…and bragging rights.

The perfect song for that would definitely be ‘Only Hope’ by Mandy Moore. It is a beautiful song, and would be fine for a Christian school. It’s really pretty, and that’s the one I recommend.

It’s really hard, but if you can pull it off: Kristin Chenoweth - The Girl in 14G. It’s something you can really use to show off your versatility.

Perhaps you should listen to your teacher. Even if you are not a huge fan of the songs, perhaps he is choosing things that he thinks will showcase your voice well. Think of your audience also, their personality won’t be the same as yours either.

You and me ( the song if u know the artist lifehouse is actually talking about the bride of christ when mentioning the girl) um… what else… I have no idea. Go with over the rainbow good song. Good luck!

I would suggest something unique. Try a song by Rasputina. Perhaps their remake of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” ? I used that for my dance solo project, and because I thought outside of the box, I’m skipping a level in dance class.

Try something by Aretha Franklin if you can. She has always been a very powerful gospel singer and most of her songs would be appropriate.
“Think” would be a real showstopper if you can pull it off.

Unchained Melody is a lovely song. The melody and chords are beautiful.

try one of the regular songs that people sing on Sundays religion services
adapt it to You.(Your favorites key signature ,slight change of the rhythm , melody and harmony)
the more and better knows the song is the better for You.

What are you competing for… a scholarship, a club, a part in a show, a solo? This will dictate the best song to choose. My kids went to Christian school and I used to teach voice, so I may be able to suggest something.

If musical theater is an option what about “I enjoy being a girl” or “in my own little corner”.

Try something from one of Stephen Sondheim’s musicals - he has great songs for sopranos! You might like Cinderella’s songs from INTO THE WOODS.

General rules for audition material -
Pick material you can do well.
If it shows off special talent, so much the better, but I have suffered listening to people sing material they were not yet ready for, because they thought it would impress me.
Try and pick something that is not well known. First, because if you are the tenth person to sing something from West Side Story, the judges are not llistening TO you, they are now comparing you to the other nine.
How about one of the Kermit the Frog songs - the one about being green? Or the one about rainbows?
Martin Luther wrote a lot of music, and his versions (as he wrote them) were often syncopated. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God is today played in strict tempo like a march - but that’s not how he wrote it. If you can find his version, it is certainly religious, and you might impress someone by knowing that this is Luther’s original version. Which is also much more fun to sing.
If you can do it, the American National Anthem is always a good piece to show off with. IF YOU CAN DO IT. (See above)

So, if you want something like “Over the Rainbow”, you’ll want a soprano ballad that can be carried off by a teenager (some songs are age specific). I recommend:
“Once Upon a December” from Disney’s Anastasia
“Somewhere Out There” from An American Tale (older children’s movie)
“Much More” from the Fantasticks
“Home” or “A Change in Me” from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Broadway version)
“One Boy” from Bye Bye Birdie
“Someone to Watch Over Me” from Crazy for You
“Love Look Away” from Flower Drum Song
“Something Wonderful” from The King and I
“My White Knight” from The Music Man
“Feed the Birds” from Mary Poppins
“The Light in the Piazza” or “The Beauty Is” from The Light in the Piazza
“Stars and the Moon” from Songs for a New World
However, for something like a talent show you’ll want something more comedic and upbeat to get the crowd into it, so I’d suggest:
“If I Were a Bell” from Guys and Dolls
“The Green Dog” by Kingsley
“I Don’t Want to Show Off” from The Drowsey Chaperone (this is a mezzo/belt piece, with some dance required, but would be a showstopper.)
“They’re Playing Our Song” from They’re Playing Our Song
“Trash” from A…My Name is Alice
“Oh, Diogenes” from The Boys from Syracuse
“Home Sweet Heaven” from High Spirits
“The Harder They Fall” from Purlie
“Popular” from Wicked
“See What I Want to See” from See What I Want to See

What about Breathe in Now by Aussie band George? It would demonstrate great versatility and most singers can’t sing it well. It’s lots of fun to sing, and leaves people gobsmacked when done well.
