What song should I sing in a high school talent show?

June 27th, 2006 | by song |
song
but you aren’t okay asked:

I’m a 14-year-old girl. My singing voice can best be described as soft and high.
I don’t mind slightly changing lyrics, and working my voice arround a song originally sung by a male.
My performance is supposed to be under 3 minutes long, and most of what I listen to is longer than that (I guess there’s always the cutting of instrumental parts and really repetitive lyrics…).
I want to sing something “fun”, because I sang a slow song last year.
I can’t scream at will, so anything falling into the loud, harsh rock, category is out, and I don’t want to sing something that everyone will have already heard.
Other than that, I haven’t ruled out any genre completely.

Any suggestions?

hmm… well im 14 too and i sing.. heres some suggestions:

Here Comes the Sun — The Beatles (3:06)
Before He Cheats — Carrie Underwood (3:19)
If We Were A Movie — Hannah Montana (3:03)
    Everything I’m Not — The Veronicas (3:22)

those are some “fun” songs that are as close to 3 mins as I could find.. plus they’re all songs that i think people our age would know. well, whatever song you pick i hope you do well and good luck!

Choose songs that fit your voice. Record yourself and see how it sounds as it sounds different outside compared to in our heads.

I haven’t heard your voice so not exactly sure which songs to recommend. Try some Dance dance revolution or such songs. A lot of them are fun and not long, with many having soft high voices. If you can sing in other languages that would give you more options as well.

Give Butterfly and Bumble Bee from DDR a try. They’re pretty high without screaming and fun paced. Butterfly is right under 3 minutes while Bumble Bee is just over 3 which you can adjust in the intro/ending.

I’d try a showtuens genre. I’ve posted the name of the song, what it’s from, and a clip from YouTube so you can listen to it.

Someone Like You - Jekyll and Hyde -

Live (For the One I Love) - Notre Dame de Paris -

Another Suitcase in Another Hall - Evita -

    (A challenge) Out Tonight - Rent -

If you chose “Live For the One I Love” it might be hard to find a karaoke version of it. So if you do want this song, I have a karaoke version, so you can email me if you want it.

    Good luck!

If you want to sing something fun, I always say you can play it safe with most jazz songs.
Look around at Ella Fitzgerald’s songs, you might find something you like!
One of my friends sang “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” and that song does have a fairly wide range of notes, but its always a good one. You’d probably have to cut out one instrumental part though.

This song is very popular and hardly fails for people in X-Factor (Talent show contest) in the UK:

Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting For You

How about Never Again by Kelly Clarkson? I believe it is a really good song for a soft and high kind of voice. Another option is Breakaway, also by Kelly. That might be a good choice because it has some parts that would be great for the way you explained your voice. I hope this helps, and best of luck! ;-)
