Anything that can showcase your range and vocal quality will work. It doesn’t have to be a song or style that fits the musical your trying out for. If you have a strong voice try singing something from a more classic musical like phantom of the opera or jacks song from nightmarebefore christmas. Not so strong? something from tales of the south pacific, high school musical or moulin rouge would be great…

You need to sing whatever you feel comfortable singing, whatever is in your range and what will show off your voice the most. You didn’t say whether you are a tenor or bass, or what your singing style is (Josh Groban, Chris Brown, Kenny Chesney, etc.) so I am not sure what you should pick. Whether you are most at ease singing show tunes or a pop ballad or classical you should look for sheet music/digital music which has simple lyrics and a melody you can remember easily so if you get nervous you can still perform the song well. Practice singing several songs into a tape or CD and listening to it to see what sounds good and where you need to improve if you like a song that is more complex. Prepare two songs, just in case you are asked to sing something else. Whatever you do, try to stay away from songs that most people will probably try but don’t sing anything too obscure. Try something unique yet familiar and unless this is a singing/dance audition do not dance while singing, just focus on the singing.

you should sing something with a nice high note, or maybe something with a low note. something that lets the instructors see you range. also, smile and raise your eyebrows while you sing. i know that wasnt you question, just some extra tips. usually, the directors will want to hear a broadway song so try to experiment with some of those. dont go in there and sing a rap song! lol. also, the judges will want to see that you are experienced in music and it is a good idea to show that you know a variety. a uselful tip is not to sing a song from the production unless asked to. for my last audition, i sang “somewhere over the rainbow” but it was a katharine mcphee version with high notes. so maybe just try some broadway songs and experiment with your voice!! have fun and good luck!!

Hi, What to sing depends upon your range. Generally speaking, most high school musicals are “old” productions, and aren’t that familiar to students. Might as well accept that MOST songs you won’t be familiar with!
It’s always a nice touch, to be able to sing one of the production songs. Hey, if you’re picked for the part, that’s one less to learn!
If possible, check the library..they may have a recording of How to etc. Pick one of Matthew Brodericks tunes to sing.
If you’re uncomfortable with that approach, consider singing
“Luck be a Lady,” from Guys and Dolls. Frank Loesser wrote the music for both “How to” and “Guys.” “Luck” is a great comedic song, and in the film Marlon Brando sang it, and Anybody can shine doing it. Do a few gestures (shaking the dice, looking up to heaven) and you’ve got it knocked!
Alternative; anything you know that is upbeat and fast paced from HS Musical or Hairspray (P.S.: “Money” is a great song from “Cabaret.” A favorite of mine, done by Joel Grey, but highly styilized, and you want to be right on.)
Good luck. Sounds interesting. Do it. You’ll enjoy the experience immensely!
