What is a good audition song for a middle aged woman to try out for a musical with?

My mom is trying out for a part as the mother in “Crossroads” the musical. I’m trying out with her but I have auditioned for shows billions of times and she is having trouble choosing a song. Keep in mind, she is middle aged and would only probably know the classics. She is an alto and needs a song to show off her voice.

Hmm. I was going to suggest ‘Memory’ from Cats just because of your handle. How about something from Fiddler on the Roof instead? ‘Do you love me?’

There is a great song from the play “Flower Drum Song” it has always been one of my favorites, I am sure your Mom has heard it, if not, I’m certain you can find the sheet music or cd, the song is called” I enjoy being a girl” It would make a great audition song I think, especially if your Mom is an outgoing person, good wishes, and have fun.

In response to suspendor: I know you just mentioned it because of the avatar, =) but FYI, you should NEVER sing “Memory” for an audition! It is THE MOST overused female audition piece on earth, and you are far less likely to impress the director with such a piece…
I would recommend you check out this link: It’s a site where you can browse musical theatre characters by character type. Once your mom finds a type she can play, have her look at/listen to some of the songs those characters sing. Definitely check it out, it’s an immensely useful site!
Just based on her voice part, if she’s an alto with a low range, I would recommend any of Rosie’s songs from “Bye Bye Birdie”. Great for any singer with a low-alto/high tenor range…and Rosie’s such a spitfire character, she’s lots of fun to play! =)
Hope that helps!
