I completely agree with you. I like this musical very much, but singer for Esmeralda does not fit to her part. (She must be younger and has appearance of a gypsy girl)

I’m italian i’m i am a great lover of both the french and italian version (Bruno Pelletier in “le temp de chatedrales” and “Lune” is simply terrific!!!)… but… no way… this songer is longer better in italian version… a more passionate interpretation (it’s enough to compare the two Frollo, Matteucci absolutely rules), and… honestly, a more credible Esmeralda… helene Segara, beautiful woman, but she’s good to interpretate the “femme fatale”, not a 16 years old teenager “bohemienne”.

The Italian version is from a (nearly) famous poet/lyrics writer (Panella)…but Cocciante compose and sing (also ?) in italian language (and many persons in italy thinks he is italian, although born in Vietnam from italian father and french mother), so I suppose that the italian version is something more than a simple translation without author’ aid.
By the way, I find the French version (as sound) the best one.

The Italian version is similar for “hair” verse, but it’s different for garden verse: talks about “enter by her doors, like the church one” (a rough verse, I prefer the “floral” version). Last verse is totally different “Oh flordalys, you see, there is no faith in me, I’ll see if is there any on her body”

Much better than Italian version:lyrics sounds sweeter and the Phoebus voice is incredible for strong & feeling (the best among all versions, IMHO).
Italian version is better only for…Esmeralda (that in this song doesn’t sing!)’cause Lola Ponce is much more beautiful and “credible” for Esmeralda personage that makes fall in love everyone.
